Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Could you receive £2,500 towards air-to-air heating and cooling?

The 2026 scheme now includes eligible air-to-air heat pumps—but it does not make every air-conditioning installation grant-funded.

Discuss your property

What is available?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently provides £2,500 towards an eligible air-to-air heat pump in a residential property. These systems can provide efficient heating in winter and cooling in summer.

Grant value: £2,500

The installer applies on the property owner’s behalf and shows the grant as an upfront reduction in the quote or invoice.

The important limitation

A wall-mounted unit that cools a room is not automatically eligible. Grant eligibility depends on the property, the existing heating being replaced, the equipment, the design and commissioning, and the installer meeting the scheme’s certification requirements.

How the process normally works

  1. Discuss the property, present heating system and rooms that need heating and cooling.
  2. An eligible installer assesses whether an air-to-air heat pump is suitable and whether the project can meet the scheme rules.
  3. The installer provides a quotation showing the grant deduction where applicable.
  4. The installer submits the application; Ofgem contacts the property owner to confirm consent and identity.
  5. The system is installed and commissioned to the required standard.

What to prepare before asking

  • Your full postcode and property type.
  • The current main heating system and fuel.
  • The rooms you want to heat and cool.
  • Whether the property is your home, a rental or a commercial building.
  • Photos or a description of possible indoor and outdoor unit positions.

Questions customers ask

How much is the air-to-air heat pump grant?

The current Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is £2,500 towards an eligible air-to-air heat pump installation.

Can I apply for the grant myself?

No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led. An eligible installer applies and the grant is deducted from the quotation or invoice.

Does every wall-mounted air conditioner qualify?

No. Cooling-only equipment does not automatically qualify. The property, system, installation and installer must meet the scheme rules, including applicable MCS requirements.

Where is the scheme available?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies to eligible properties in England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland operate different support arrangements.

Checked against current Ofgem property-owner guidance and GOV.UK grant guidance. Scheme rules can change; eligibility must be confirmed by the participating installer.
